Backpack Ministry
Did you know that in our community on any given day, hundreds of kids receive a free breakfast & lunch at their school...and that if it weren’t for these free meals, they would not eat that day? It’s true. So on the weekends, when they go home, and there’s no food in the cabinets or refrigerator, what do they do? We cannot eliminate poverty, but it seems like there should be a way to help ensure no kid has to go hungry. Walnut Grove Baptist and New Song have formed a partnership; their backpack food ministry is up and running, so rather than reinvent the wheel, we support and resource their existing efforts. Every Friday, many backpacks are dropped off at area schools to assist the area’s most vulnerable to hunger. They are filled with foods that go home to make sure no one’s hungry before the next Monday.

Parking Lot Ministry
The Parking Lot Ministry exists to make New Song Church a safer, more convenient place for people to fellowship and visit. In snow, rain, heat or gloom of night, our Parking Lot Ministry is busy completing their appointed tasks.  Each Sunday you will find volunteers faithfully serving our congregation. Their responsibilities include:
  • Managing the flow of traffic by ushering cars into spaces in a safe and feasible manner
  • Protecting the safety of our pedestrians
  • Ensuring that rules governing our handicapped parking areas are observed by all
  • Welcoming people with a warm, friendly greeting
  • Being aware of surroundings and reporting any suspicious behavior
  • Identifying potential problem areas in the parking lot/grounds, and informing appropriate church officials

The Launch

In 1997, Pastor Jim Chandler founded our church as part of 5 new church plants that were being started between Fredericksburg, VA, and the Richmond International Airport. After months of prayer and smaller group meetings hubbed out of Aldersgate United Methodist Church on Laburnum Ave., New Song began holding weekly worship services in the auditorium of Lee-Davis High School. From there, growth continued in the formation of new small groups, classes and events for all ages, in worship, and ministries with/for the community.

In 2001, land was purchased in our current setting on Colt’s Neck Road. With over 20 acres, New Song initiated a building campaign and opened our Phase I facility in September of 2002.

The Transition

In 2008, Pastor Jim announced a call to ministry that he had been discerning, and after his departure in September of that year, we welcomed Pastor Chad Herndon as our new Lead Pastor that same November.  Not long afterwards, the process of envisioning God’s plans for our future continued with the consultants from years before.

Harvestime, Inc. (now Oaster, Inc.) was secured, and we were invited out to their facility in Colorado to do intentional dreaming and discernment work. Our team of clergy, staff, and leaders shared all that God had poured into our hearts; together with their architect, God’s dreams quickly became apparent as lines became rooms, and rooms became ministries, and ministries became change agents of God’s great calling.

The Future

Our plans for Phase II are now complete, and as funds have become available, we have worked to check them off the list one at a time. Several of these projects include the expansion of our parking lot, a new playground, the acquisition of the adjacent residence to the church, and more.

Phase III includes the addition of a full-sized gymnasium that will serve as our primary worship center, as well.  New offices are included, as is a new water feature, covered drop-off zone, a commercial kitchen, and a new administrative suite. Both of these will require the serious efforts of God’s faithful, but we have faith that the Lord will continue to show us the way forward.

God is doing amazing things, near and far, through this church!  From missions and service, worship, and discipleship, we invite you to join in the journey!  There’s no better time to join us than NOW; so grab a friend, and let’s be faithful to all that God has asked of us, together.
Is there a dress code?
We're more concerned with meeting your real life and spiritual needs than with what you wear. Our worship attire is considered, by most, to be somewhat casual, so feel free to wear whatever makes you feel most comfortable.

What other ministries does New Song Church offer?
We have a variety of ministries that serve our church internally, as well as the community around us. These range from our Worship and Youth ministries to our monthly Food Pantry. To learn more, please check out the "connect" drop-tab at the top of this page.
Who can I contact if I have additional questions or concerns?
Church Office hours and contact information are available here.  Our church’s pastors, staff and leadership invite you to share with us about any of the ways we can help you– stop by, call, email, text… we’re open to any of the ways that would be helpful to you.
You can also connect with us on social media.
Mission Statement
Connecting and growing together in a real relationship with Jesus Christ.
Vision Statement
A catalyst to bring our community to Christ.
Core Values
God’s love and grace are beyond our imagination. Colossians 3:23 tells us “to work as if what we do is for the Lord Himself.” We can’t help but give our best. With this emphasis in mind, New Song strives to put forth excellence with the following core values in place:

People Matter: Jesus showed that it was the people who matter. How can we do any less? We want to be in authentic and caring relationship with everyone we encounter.

Discipleship Matters: In Matthew 28:19-20, Jesus tells His disciples to “go and make disciples.” This means not only to tell others about Jesus, but also to help people to grow in their faith and in their relationship with Jesus, across the street and across the globe.

Impact Matters: New Song’s intent is to make a difference: a difference in our community, a difference around the world. When we walk with God, we will have an impact.

Foundational Scripture
To focus our ministry with Scripture, we turn to Matthew 22:36-40 every single day. “36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.””
To simply state this scripture, we are to
“Love God and Love People!”
