A Biblical Understanding for Giving
David praised the Lord before the entire assembly: “O Lord God of our father Israel, you deserve praise forevermore! O Lord, you are great, mighty, majestic, magnificent, glorious, and sovereign over all the sky and earth! You have dominion and exalt yourself as the ruler of all. You are the source of wealth and honor; you rule over all. You possess strength and might to magnify and give strength to all. Now, our God, we give thanks to you and praise your majestic name. “But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from You, and we have given You only what comes from Your hand. ~ 1 Chron. 29:10-14
David acknowledged the sovereignty of God over everything he had. God has given each one of us the responsibility of managing our finances, and one who manages assets, affairs or property belonging to someone else is called a “steward.” The “someone else,” who is owner of all, is God!
As stewards of what God has entrusted to us, it is our responsibility to recognize that God owns everything and we own nothing. An attitude of gratefulness is the appropriate response to God, for the things He has placed in our care. Like David, the key question for us should not be, “How much are we required to give?” Rather it should be, “How can I maximize what God has given me to bring God glory?”
So why do we give to the church?
We give because the Bible tells us to give the first 10% of everything because it all belongs to the Lord. (Leviticus 27, Numbers 18, Deuteronomy 12 and 2 Chronicles 31 are some references toward tithing)
Giving to the church supports the “business” of the church. The church’s mission depends on Christ’s people faithfully giving to the church. That is how we provide everything from payment for providing Bibles and devotionals for newcomers and local agencies, mission trips and outreach, utility bills, a living wage for our staff, and ministries across the board for all ages.
In our giving, we are given permission to “test” God. In Malachi 3:10 “’Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test Me in this,’ says the Lord Almighty, ‘and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.’”
In our giving, we provide an opportunity to help our community. So many times, we think of helping people in third world countries or Africa. However, we have so many opportunities to help our neighbors right here in Mechanicsville and the Richmond region. This is why we give.
Tithes and Offerings
The word “tithe,” meaning 10%, comes from the Old Testament. God set down the guidelines for tithing to cause us to recognize God’s ownership of everything, on a regular basis, as well as to teach us, as believers, to put God first in our lives.
When you give your tithe, you are giving back to God what is already God’s, what is expected, what is required. In giving an offering, you are giving a gift to God from a heart of love, over and above the tithe. The tithe is an act of obedience; the offering is a statement of love.
God has blessed our lives in countless ways. Giving back in faith, whether in tithes or in offerings, is a privilege which causes believers to overflow with thankfulness for all of God’s many blessings. What has God entrusted to you? How are you managing it? God’s own words in Matthew 25:14 -28 tell us that the reason we may not have much is because God cannot trust us with much! Our Lord blesses wise managers with even more to manage.
At New Song Church, we believe that God has entrusted time, talents and treasures to us as believers, and expects us to manage them in ways that bring honor to God. We conveniently offer you the capability to give online, in addition to the invitation to contribute in our worship services or through the Church Office.
Giving is one of the central themes in the Bible. Jesus talked more about this subject than heaven, hell or even prayer. To understand what it means to be a Christ-follower, we must also understand what it means to be a cheerful giver.
Only two things will last forever: people and the Church. By investing in the life-changing and life-giving message of the church, you can leverage your resources for eternity. (I Timothy 6:7)
Giving online is safe and secure. Whether you want to submit a single donation or would like to set up scheduled giving, you can now do it all online – even pay for resources or make specific contributions. You may give either by a withdrawal from your checking account or we accept all major credit cards through E-Giving.
Bank Draft (ACH) & Debit Cards
We encourage the use of ACH automated transactions by a bank debit account. Once on the E-Giving webpage, simply fill in your contact information in the “update your account” section, and you will then be prompted to schedule and set your giving preferences.
Credit Cards
If you choose to give online using a credit card, you will follow the same process as you would for a check or debit card. At New Song Church, we offer this service as a convenience. Research shows the vast majority of those in our society who utilize credit cards do so to accumulate rewards (points, miles, dollars, etc.). We do not encourage the use of credit cards to accumulate debt. In fact, we would at no time encourage a household to go into debt in order to give to God: we discern this practice to be out of line with Scripture. However, for those who are able to responsibly use their credit cards and who prefer this method for contributions, we pray this will be one additional means of connecting your heart to God through the spiritual discipline of giving.
If you have any questions or concerns about online giving, please do not hesitate to contact our Church Office.
